Findlay City Schools Working To Address Financial Issues

Findlay City School Board talked more about finances during their Monday meeting. Treasurer Mike Barnhart said that the board should see a financial forecast soon.

Barnhart said that they are coming up with plans to save costs though.

He added that this could delay some of the improvements scheduled for the schools. Barnhart said that they are trying to save the district as much money as possible before resorting to cuts.

Japanese Delegates Coming To Findlay City School District

Findlay City School district will be hosting delegates from the Kawaguchi. Board of Education later this week. Superintendent Ed Kurt said that they are looking forward to learning from the delegates and forming a partnership.

The delegates want to start preparation for two Kawaguchi High School students to come study at FCS. They also want to discuss sending teachers from Findlay City Schools to Kawaguchi for a study tour.

The delegates are arriving this Friday and will leave Next Saturday.

Community Forum Next Week For Financial Stability Initiative

The United Way of Hancock County is hosting a community forum for their new Financial Stability Initiative. The forum will be on October 10 at the Marathon Center for the Performing Arts. Registration and refreshments will begin at 4:30 p.m. with the forum starting an hour later. There is no cost to attend the event and it is open to the public.
 
The new initiative will work to improve the financial stability for hundreds of Hancock County households. It will support efforts to help the unemployed develop tools and strategies to reach the stability.

Harvest Season Means More Farmers On The Roadways

Harvest season is here which means you are going to see more farm machinery out and about. OSU extension educator Ed Lentz said that you’ll want to be patient if you get behind one.

Lentz said that if you’re patient the driver will probably pull over to let you around when it is possible. He added that on days before rain farmers will often work longer days. You’ll want to be careful because this will make it easier for them to make a mistake.

Nationally Recognized Author Talks About Addiction In Findlay

Findlay residents learned more about what it’s like to have an addict in the family Monday. D’Anne Burwell, the author of “Saving Jake: When Addiction Hits Home” spoke to the Findlay Rotary and Kiwanis clubs. She said there are a number of barriers to helping an addict, including how insurance handles treatment…

Burwell said it’s frustrating for families to run into an insurance road block when it’s already a struggle to get an addicted family member to the point they’ll accept treatment.

Burwell added myths and stigma about addiction hold back chances to make inroads in battling the ongoing opioid epidemic…

She says aside from the stigma an addict and their families feel, myths about addiction also keep people from learning about the science of addiction and the overprescription of opioids.

Kenton Home Invasion Injures One

10/2/17 – 7:35 A.M.

A home invasion in Kenton sent one person to the hospital late last week. WKTN radio reports the incident happened in the 300 block of North Main Street Thursday morning.

Investigators say emergency responders took one victim to Hardin Memorial Hospital. They later transferred him to Grant Medical Center in Columbus.

Police arrested 18-year-old Peyton George and 20-year-old Ashton Mundy. They face aggravated robbery charges. Authorities say they found suspected drugs and weapons in the home.

Continental Structure Plastics Hiring In North Baltimore

A North Baltimore employer is adding jobs. The Sentinel-Tribune reports Continental Structural Plastics is holding a job fair on Wednesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. each day. The company says they need to add around 100 new workers.

Several positions are open. The company says they’ll accept applications on site.

Continental Structural Plastics is located at 100 South Poe Road.

Local Gas Prices Up Over The Last Week

10/2/17 – 7:04 A.M.

Local gas prices are higher as we start a new work week. OhioGasPrices.com reports the average price for a gallon of regular in Findlay is $2.26 today. That’s up nine cents over the last week. A month ago Findlay drivers were paying $2.53 for a gallon of regular.

Local prices are below the state average, which stands at $2.34 per gallon. That’s up eight cents over the last seven days.

Three Injured In Weekend Crash West Of Findlay

10/2/17 – 6:41 A.M.

A two-car crash injured three people west of Findlay over the weekend. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office reports the accident happened on State Route 12 at the intersection with County Road 84 around 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

17-year-old Corrine Groves of Findlay was driving west on Road 84 when she stopped at the intersection. Investigators say she then pulled into the path of an eastbound car driven by 29-year-old Cuyler Mckitrick of Findlay. Hanco EMS took Mckitrick and his passenger to Blanchard Valley Hospital for treatment of their injuries. A family member took Groves to the hospital.

Deputies cited Groves for failure to yield.

Two Injured In Saturday Crash In Jackson Township

10/2/17 – 5:41 A.M.

A two-car crash injured two people in Jackson Township over the weekend. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office says the collision happened at the intersection of State Route 15 and Township Road 180 just before 6 p.m. Saturday.

A pickup truck driven by 53-year-old Timothy Lester of Marion was eastbound on Route 15 when 21-year-old Erica Cole of Findlay tried to cross the highway and pulled into the path of Lester’s truck. Hanco EMS took Cole and a 2-year-old passenger in her car to Blanchard Valley Hospital for treatment. The crash did not injure Lester.

Deputies cited Cole for failure to stop.
