New Support Group Aims To Help People Affected By Loved One’s Suicide Attempt

A new support group in Findlay aims to help people affected by a loved one’s suicide attempt. The group will meet for the first time Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church basement meeting room.

Century Health will facilitate the meetings. The group is open to anyone experiencing stress after a loved one’s suicide attempt.

Tiffin University President Facing OVI Charge

12/4/18 – 5:26 A.M.

The president of Tiffin University is facing an OVI charge. The Advertiser-Tribune reports 52-year-old Lillian Schumacher has a hearing this week in Ottawa County Municipal Court.

The alleged incident happened on August 31. A State Patrol trooper reports clocking Schumacher driving 44 miles-per-hour in a 35 miles-per-hour zone. The patrol says she had a blood-alcohol content of .117. The legal limit in Ohio is .08.

Carey To Save Money On Financing For Substation

12/4/18 – 5:18 A.M.

Efforts to refinance a new multi-million-dollar electric substation on County Highway 96 in Carey should save the village some money. Council members learned on Monday the interest rate for the bond will be 3 percent in 2019. That will save Carey around $39,000 on financing for the more than $4.8 million project.

Council learned the village had received approval for an American Municipal Power bond-anticipation note. An Ohio Market Access Program application also had received approval for the project.

Two Injured In Trenton Avenue Crash

12/4/18 – 5:02 A.M.

A two-car crash injured a pair of teenagers in Findlay Monday afternoon. The Findlay Police Department says the crash happened in the 700 block of West Trenton Avenue around 5:45 p.m.

17-year-old Alexis Bear of Findlay was trying to turn left into the Wendy’s parking lot when she collided with a westbound SUV driven by 16-year-old Cayla Collingwood of McComb. Hanco Ambulance took both drivers to Blanchard Valley Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Officers cited Bear for failure to yield on a left turn.

Carey Gears Up For The Holiday Season With Annual Event This Friday

12/03/18 – 4:49 P.M.

The annual “Christmas in Carey” event is coming up this Friday. The event is sponsored by the Carey Area Chamber of Commerce. It will feature the annual tree lighting ceremony as well as a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. Local businesses will also have their doors open for people to stop and shop. Some offerings will be free while others will require payment.

The event kicks off with the tree lighting at 5 p.m. and lasts until 8 p.m. this Friday.

Ohio State Highway Patrol Joins Other Agencies To Reduce Commercial Vehicle Crashes

12/03/18 – 2:27 P.M.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol will take part in a multi-state commercial vehicle enforcement operation on I-70 and I-75. Troopers and motor carrier enforcement inspectors will focus on doing roadside level 3 inspections and traffic enforcement. Level 3 inspections target driver qualifications, including proper licensing, medical certificates and hours of service.

The operation seeks to reduce commercial vehicle crashes along both interstates. The initiative started today and lasts until Friday.

Kentucky Man Injured In Hancock County Crash

12/3/18 – 7:35 A.M.

A one-car crash injured a Kentucky man in Hancock County late last week. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office reports 44-year-old Daniel Johnson was driving south on County Road 139 south of U.S. 224 around 6 p.m. when he went off the right side of the road and hit a street sign.

Hanco Ambulance took Johnson to Blanchard Valley Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The crash remained under investigation Friday night.

Pellet Gun Used To Shoot At Windows Around Findlay

12/3/18 – 7:22 A.M.

Findlay police are looking for the person who shot at windows around the city with a pellet gun Sunday. One of the buildings that was hit was The Courier. The sports department tweeted that someone drove by and shot at the windows just before 10 p.m.

The Findlay Police Department reports that the first calls came in around 7:45 p.m. They are continuing to investigate the vandalism.

Wrong-Way Crash Injures One On Friday

12/3/18 – 6:51 A.M.

A drunk driver caused a wrong-way crash south of Findlay Friday night. The State Highway Patrol reports the collision happened at the U.S. 68 interchange with State Route 15 around 8:20 p.m.

40-year-old John Richards of Carey was driving his pickup truck east in the westbound lanes of the highway. He hit a semi driven by a Sterling Heights, Michigan man and then another semi driven by an Oak Park Michigan man. Hanco EMS took Richards to Blanchard Valley Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The truck drivers weren’t injured.

The crash blocked traffic for around two hours.

Troopers cited Richards for driving the wrong way and operating a vehicle while under the influence.
